East Lothian is the most accessible route from the south to the capital for any land invader of Scotland. Across the centuries armies fought their way over the county to the terrible detriment of the inhabitants. Roman, Northumbrians, English, Scots and French armies fortified, fought and died here. The Act of Union in 1707 promised an end to war in East Lothian until Bonnie Prince Charlie and Johnnie Cope brought their armies to Prestonpans in 1745, and threats continued from overseas.

Describing and analyzing the miliray encounters, Arran Johnston shows how the main strands of Scottish history come together, from the Saltire’s first appearance before Athelstaneford in 832, through bitter Anglo-Scottish conflicts (Dunbar in 1296 and 1650, and Pinkie in 1547) and the trials of civil strife (Carberry Hill 1567 and Prestonpans 1745), and then the Massacre of Tranent in 1797. Along with the great battles, the author also covers less well-known conflicts, including sieges and skirmishes. Throughout, contemporary sources are drawn upon, as well as visits to the sites of these battles today.
